Background of the Study:
Indigenous agricultural practices are time-tested methods rooted in local ecological knowledge. In Ifo, Ogun State, traditional farming techniques—such as crop rotation, intercropping, and natural fertilization—play a crucial role in ensuring food security by promoting sustainable land use and biodiversity (Ogunleye, 2023; Balogun, 2024). These methods maintain soil fertility and adapt to climate variability, contributing to consistent food production and nutritional diversity (Olatunde, 2023). This study examines the impact of indigenous agricultural practices on food security, evaluating their effectiveness in improving crop yields, ensuring nutrition, and supporting local economies, while also considering challenges in integrating traditional practices with modern technologies.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the benefits of indigenous agricultural practices in enhancing food security, their effectiveness in Ifo Local Government is under-documented. Modern agricultural techniques often overshadow traditional methods, leading to a gradual erosion of indigenous practices, which may compromise sustainable food production (Ogunleye, 2023; Balogun, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of indigenous agricultural practices on food security.
  2. To analyze the effectiveness of traditional farming techniques in improving crop yields and nutritional diversity.
  3. To recommend strategies for integrating indigenous practices with modern methods to enhance food security.

Research Questions:

  1. How do indigenous agricultural practices influence food security in Ifo?
  2. What is the effectiveness of traditional farming techniques in improving crop yields and nutritional diversity?
  3. What strategies can integrate indigenous and modern agricultural practices for enhanced food security?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Indigenous agricultural practices positively affect food security.
  2. Traditional farming techniques significantly improve crop yields and nutritional diversity.
  3. Integrating indigenous and modern methods enhances overall food security.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it underscores the role of indigenous agricultural practices in ensuring food security. Its findings will benefit policymakers, agricultural practitioners, and local communities by providing insights into sustainable farming methods that promote ecological balance and food resilience.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to examining the effect of indigenous agricultural practices on food security in Ifo Local Government, Ogun State. It focuses on traditional techniques, crop yields, and nutritional outcomes, with limitations including reliance on region-specific data and exclusion of external market factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Indigenous Agricultural Practices: Traditional farming methods rooted in local ecological knowledge.
  2. Food Security: The availability and accessibility of sufficient, nutritious food to meet community needs.
  3. Sustainable Farming: Agricultural practices that maintain ecological balance and support long-term food production.
